Video Backup System (VBS) was a hardware add-on for Amiga computers that allowed users to back up data onto standard video cassettes using a VCR. This system used analog video recording to store digital data, making it a cost-effective solution for backing up large amounts of data at the time.

Key Features:

  • Connection:

    • VBS connected to the Amiga's serial port and a VCR via composite video connectors (RCA).
    • Data was transmitted through the serial port, converted into a video signal, and recorded onto a video cassette.
  • Backup Process:

    • Users could back up entire hard drives or multiple floppy disk images onto a VHS, BetaMax, or 8mm video cassette.
    • Restoring data required manually rewinding the tape to the correct position using the VCR’s tape counter.
  • Compatibility:

    • Worked with different video cassette formats since data was recorded as a video signal.

System Requirements:

  • Memory: At least 1 MB RAM.
  • Operating System: AmigaOS 2.0 or higher.

Limitations:

  • Slow Transfer Speed:

    • Due to the Amiga’s serial port limitations, the backup and restore process was relatively slow.
  • Manual Operation:

    • Backing up and restoring data required manually controlling the VCR, making frequent backups inconvenient.

The Video Backup System was an innovative backup solution for Amiga users at a time when other backup methods were expensive or unavailable. However, it is now obsolete and has been replaced by more modern storage and backup technologies.
